The Music of Ignatz Waghalter

Alexander has been pioneering the rediscovery of the music of Ignatz Waghalter, recording and performing a number of his orchestral works. He discovered and reconstructed the New World Suite composed for the composer’s African American Orchestra which was subsequently published by Simrock (Boosey and Hawkes).

The Alma Project

Together with mezzo soprano Elizabether Stützer, he has devised the Alma Project, a concert of music and words based around the life, music, friends and loves of Alma Mahler for performance with ensemble. Performances are planned throughout Austria, Germany and the UK.

Other Projects

Music for Peace

Alexander Walker is honoured to have been invited to collaborate with Music for Peace, which gives concerts in conflict zones and areas devastated by war and natural disaster as well as working with artists from such areas.

Educational Work

In addition to professorial appointments at the Royal Academy of Music, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Alexander has led education projects and workshops for the Royal Opera House, English Touring Opera, Britten Sinfonia and the Opera School (Wales).

His opera productions have frequently included a strong community element such as Jonathan Dove’s Tobias and the Angel and Janáček’s the Cunning Little Vixen at the Oundle International Festival. He was involved in commissioning Prophet and Loss, a new community opera by Julian Grant. He works with several youth orchestras and enjoys coaching chamber music.

Alexander is also active as an arranger and composer.

The Symphonies of Havergal Brian

Recording 12 of Brian’s symphonies for Naxos as well as performing these works, Alexander has championed the music of Havergal Brian. He has been made a vice-president of the Havergal Brian Society for the work he has done to promote the composer’s music.
